The Neuroethics of LAWS from Neural Networks to Robotics and Back Again

Many of the ethical issues in LAWS and robotics turn on topics commonly treated in the ethics of neurotechnology, such as our understanding of the brain and nervous system, prospects for the enhancement of its capacities, and the related ethical, legal and social issues (ELSI).

Defining the Technical Challenges of Autonomous Weapons Systems to Address Ethical and Policy Challenges

A lot of work has been done to identify and clarify ethical and legal concerns regarding autonomous weapons systems (AWS), and many ethical principles have been broadly agreed upon. However, these principles are not easily translated into programmable code, and much of the terminology in the principles can be vague or inconsistently defined among disparate groups.

International Legal & Diplomatic Challenges Posed by Autonomous Weapons & AI-Assisted Systems

This talk introduces the challenges posed by the heightened use of autonomous weapons and the increasing militarization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the existing international legal order by appraising the relevant parts of international law: state responsibility, the law on the use of force, international humanitarian law (IHL), human rights law, and international criminal law.

Autonomous Armed Robots & the Principle of Distinction: Does Robotic Killing Violate the Laws of War?

Experts in the laws of war have been grappling with the ethics and legality of semi-autonomous weapons systems such as heat-sensing lethal drones. Many have praised the use of technologies on the grounds that they provide greater distinction than the indiscriminate bombing of the wars of the past.

AI Standards: Best Practices for Ethical Systems

Factors that relate to transparency in systems, the difference in outcomes that those factors can create, as well as practical techniques that can be applied to encourage a greater quality of transparency in consistent and rigorous ethical systems are explored in this course. Topics include factors that tend to drive or inhibit the quality of transparency in systems, small differences that may lead to major differences over time, and practical steps towards implementing more consistent and rigorous ethical systems.

Their Bionic Eyes Are Now Obsolete and Unsupported

More than 350 blind people around the world recently found themselves in a world in which the neural implant technology that transformed their lives was just another obsolete gadget. IEEE Spectrum pieced together their story by interviewing half a dozen patients, a company cofounder, and eight doctors or researchers involved with the company. In their telling, the future of high-tech vision implants seems blurrier than ever.
